Madame Bovary. 1st English Edition, Translated by Marx-Aveling

See Photo Album Below

Author: Gustave Flaubert (translated into English by Eleanor Marx-Aveling)

Title: Madame Bovary, Provincial Manners

Publisher: London: Vizetelly & Co.

Year: 1886 (1st English Edition, translated by Marx-Aveling)

Pages: [1 blank], [2 pp Ad for Salambo], Half-title blank on reverse side, [xxii includes Frontis, Title page, Dedication by Flaubert, and introduction by Marx-Aveling], 283 pp. [1 blank], 6 illustrations. All text and illustrations accounted for and COMPLETE.

Size: Large 12mo (or, 7 3/4" by 5 1/2")

Condition: Text is Near Fine, binding is Fine.

A very attractive, clean, tight copy in a binding as beautiful as the text. The condition of the binding is excellent: Tight, square, like new coming off a recent rebinding. The leather is full teal calf. Gold gilt to spine and turn-ins (some light rubbing to gold on turn-in, see photo). Bound faithful to the original teal cloth desigin, ornate portions of which have been laid in to the front cover. The arrangment of designs on cover, as well as the arrangment of the title and author on the spine, are faithful to the arrangment of the layout of the original teal cloth. A very unique binding -- in most ways simply a finer version of the original. 5 raised bands, top page ends gilt, handmade silk end-bands. Marbled endpapers, although the original black endpapers are also present in the front and back. The text is equally beautiful. The paper quality is excellent, and there are many steel-cut ornaments and initials throughout (probably close to 150, maybe more). The pages are clean with only the lightest bit of toning to margins...about as close to like new as this book can be. There are 3 faults in the text and they take the form of previous owner's signatures. The first is easily found on the blank side of the frontispiece, the second is hidden lightly in a steel-cut ornament on the Introduction's first page, and the last is a light signature on the last page of the book. All are by the same person, and none are very large or obtrusive. This book was loved by the previous owner, and it shows not only the signature faults, but also in the excellent condition in which it has otherwise been maintained. The tissue guard to frontispiece is clean, unwrinkled, secure. All illustrations throughout are in the same great condition as the rest of the book.
This edition is of course highly desireable, being the first English edition. This variant has the ads for Salambo at the front. The translation is also of importance, being the first Marx-Aveling translation...Eleanor Marx-Aveling of course being the daughter of Karl Marx.
